A questions about creating an account in itunes?

Okay i just got an itouch and now im ready to put in everything. I realized that i need to creat an account on itunes to access the apps and all but its asking for my credit card number. If i put in my credit card number, will i be paying for anything even if i dont buy any music or apps? Will they take money out of my pocket?
