Is a job legally required to pay u severance?

ok i got laid off of work because they said that they could no longer afford my employment any more. i was talking to my friend today and he said that he just got laid off but he is getting severance. they never gave me options and they never gave me notice. i dont qualify for unemployment either. just wondering if anyone knows the legality of my situation..
