How can i teach my horse to trot?

i have a 4yo gelding who i backed this year, he will happily go out on short/medium hacks with another horse or someone walking/cycling. i need to teach him how to trot but he's quite spooky and nervous and it took me a year just to sit on him. does anyone have any good ideas?
